Lessons

At SRE, we focus on the basics.  Good horsemanship, safe handling and riding practices, and biomechanics that improve your ability to influence the horse are helpful to riders in any sport.

Our program developer has been riding for 30 years under the instruction of Diane Maynard, an international horse-master who received her formal training at Morven Park, our nations most prestigious riding establishment.  Ms. Maynard has several times produced the USEA horse of the year and qualified for the US Olympic team.  She travels to Stratton Ridge regularly for camps and clinics.

We accept riders of all kinds, but our expertise is in Combined Training.  A rigorous discipline that has is roots in military riding and includes elements of Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross-Country.

We have experience in taking the never ever rider and bringing them into the show ring, but we are very happy to teach a rider that just wants to pleasure ride.

There is no better place for your child to learn life lessons than in the horse barn.  Our current group of young riders are fun, friendly and excited to talk to new riders!

Payment and Scheduling

  • Private lessons are $45 each and group lessons are $30.  Your child must complete a riding assessment to qualify to ride in a group lesson.  Group lessons may be 2 or 3 riders.

  • After your initial evaluation session, regular lessons are scheduled a month at a time and payment is due on the 1st of every month via cash, check or paypal.

    • If you cannot make your scheduled lesson time, please letus know via call or text as soon as possible.  Makeup lessons will always be held on Sunday for the previous week.  If notice is not given you are responsible for payment for the lesson.

  • Weather cancelations will be determined by the instructor and are usually rescheduled or refunded.

Lesson Instruction

  • Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled lesson time.

  • Lessons are 45 minutes long with the first 15 minutes being devoted to horse care and tacking up.  If your child is capable of grooming and tacking independently after being assessed they will be allowed to do this prior to the start of their lesson and devote the full 45 minutes to ride time.

  • You should allow for 20-30 minutes after your child’s ride time to untack, clean tack, wash his/her horse and whatever else the horse may need. These tasks are important for any equestrian to learn and practice and will contribute to the relationship built with the horse as well as encourage overall good horsemanship.

  • Jumping and cross country lessons are offered once a student can steer his/her horse at the trot and canter WITHOUT stirrups around the perimeter of the indoor arena.

  • Our show team currently travels with 4 riders.  Qualified riders between the ages of 8 and 17 are invited to participate.  Offsite show riders are selected for each show 2 weeks prior based on rider ability and effort.

Safety Rules

  • Safety is our first concern.  Horses are prey animals, and are therefore sometimes unpredictable.  We can improve our experience with them and limit injury by adhering to a predictable set of activities.  If you do not follow directions, argue with the guide/instructor or disregard barn rules, you may be asked to dismount from the horse.

  • ALL riders must wear certified ASTM/SEI helmets, riders are required to bring their own helmets. (We do offer helmets to borrow if you don’t mind sharing)

  • Jeans or pants and boots with a heel are required to ride.  Girls please have long hair neatly tied back.

  • Please don't pet or feed any horse without your guides/instructors presence and permission.

  • Students and parents must read and sign the barn rules and liability waiver.

  • During June and July, all rides are scheduled very early morning and very late evening to protect horses and riders from the Texas heat.  Summer lessons will all be group lessons inclusive of camp riders.  Lesson horses are off for the month of August.
